I recently had the pleasure of photographing this lovely new family in their beautiful home in East London, overlooking the River Thames with views stretching towards Greenwich and the city skyline.
Their flat was filled with the most incredible natural light, creating the perfect calm atmosphere for a relaxed newborn session at home.
Like many first-time parents, mum and dad were doing their very best while navigating those early newborn days — a mixture of love, adjustment and, of course, a little sleep deprivation. They were incredibly warm and accommodating throughout the session, even when their sweet baby girl decided she had no interest in sleeping for the camera.
And honestly, that is completely normal.
One of the things I always reassure parents during newborn sessions is that babies don’t need to “perform” for beautiful photographs. Feeding breaks, cuddles, settling time and even a few tears are all part of these early days, and there is never any pressure to rush.
Rather than trying to force sleepy poses, we simply followed her lead and adapted the session around her mood. Some of my favourite newborn photographs come from moments exactly like these — tiny stretches, curious little expressions, cuddles with mum and dad, and the quiet in-between moments that naturally unfold during a session at home.
Lifestyle newborn photography is never about perfection. It’s about documenting this fleeting stage of life honestly and gently, in a place that already holds so much meaning for a family.
The combination of soft light, peaceful surroundings and the excitement of these first days together made this such a special session to photograph.
It was truly a pleasure to capture these early memories for this lovely family and their sweet baby girl.
